Students recognized for their dedication to performance sports

Winning students and staff celebrating the scholarship launch stood on the steps of the School of Medicine

The University of Birmingham’s College of Medical and Dental Sciences is launching a new ‘Elite and Performance Sports Award’ which will support students studying courses such as Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Nursing, Midwifery or Pharmacy who also excel at sport to achieve their courses. maximum potential.

The scholarship aims to assist high-performing athletes at university or post-graduate level, recognizing that pursuing a high-flying sporting career whilst at university comes at a cost. Awards are recognition that aims to offset some of the costs, be it travel, equipment or other expenses.

The awards are to congratulate our top elite and performance sports competitors, recognize their dedication and thank these students for being fantastic ambassadors for our university and its leading position in UK sport. It is important and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

Professor Neil Hanley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College.

Students studying within the College who compete at first team level in one of the University’s designated “Performance Sports” – namely, hockey, squash, athletics, swimming, badminton, rugby or netball – at national or international level will be eligible to receive an annual award of £500. Any students who are part of the University’s Elite Dual Career Athlete Pathway (EDCAP) will receive an annual award of £1000.

Year five student Yasmin, part of the Team GB judo team for eight years, received an elite award. She won eight British Championships, along with medals from two European Championships and several European Cups. In 2022 he won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, an experience he describes as “incredible”, especially as the competition was held here in Birmingham.

“I’ve had my heart set on Birmingham since I was in high school. We are so fortunate at the dental hospital to have access to the incredible new facilities we are building and access to some incredible leading clinicians in their specialty areas. The facilities were such a draw and then the support you get from the scholarship team as an athlete was just the icing on the cake” explains Yasmin.

Yasmin has been well supported by the scholarship team throughout her undergraduate studies, both financially, in terms of timetables and wellbeing, but is delighted to be recognized for her efforts through the new ‘Elite Sports Award and performance” of the College.

A lot of my spare money goes into judo and training etc. I don’t have much money left to finance my progress in the world of dentistry. I think I will use this award to focus on my studies, maybe attend dental conferences and things I may have missed in the years I spent focusing so much on judo . I will help myself to keep a stable balance.

Yasmin Javadian, fifth year dental student and judo competitor.

“The University of Birmingham Sport is delighted that the College of Medical and Dental Sciences has launched these awards to support some of the University’s most talented athletes.
