Josh Windass reveals the ‘big component’ behind potential new Sheffield Wednesday deal

Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass has revealed a “big component” that could dictate his future at the club.

Windass is one of a number of players out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, four years after joining the club on a permanent basis.

Since then, the 30-year-old striker has scored 40 goals in 135 total appearances for the Owls, scoring the penultimate goals in the past two seasons.

And both goals were crucial too, one being the winner in the League One play-off final and the second securing Championship status for Sheffield Wednesday in their final day win at Sunderland.

After the win against Sunderland, Windass posted a cryptic message on social media that appeared to hint at a new contract for him in S6.

And now he has revealed that manager Danny Rohl is a “big component” in whether or not he stays at Hillsborough for the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

Josh Windass reveals the Danny Rohl factor in the Sheffield Wednesday contract

Speaking on the Official EFL Podcast with former Owls midfielder David Prutton, Windass was quizzed about his future.

He said: “At this point, I don’t really know. I know the club is now talking to my agent about the next few years. I’m going on vacation and I still don’t know what’s going on with Danny.”

Prutton then asked Windass whether Rohl staying at the club would play a role in whether or not he signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday.

Windass said: “I think so, yes. But obviously I want to be at the club anyway. We’ve had such an affiliation and had so much fun for the last three or four years.

“But Danny is a big component, I think for most guys, to be honest. I think we feel like next year we can go to even bigger things.”

The latest on Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday future is that he has held positive talks with owner Dejphon Chansiri, said talks also including discussions of a potential new contract for Rohl whose current deal expires after the 2024/25 season.

There is an obvious air among Sheffield Wednesday fans right now that the ball is very much in Chansiri’s court regarding Rohl’s future.

And Rohl’s future feels very much like the future of Sheffield Wednesday as a whole, with his return to the Championship so unprecedented.

Windass’ comments reaffirm that view, and so keeping Rohl happy and content, and at the club, for the foreseeable, will have huge and far-reaching benefits for the club as a whole.

One of those benefits may see the club keep a host of players out of contract in the summer, meaning they won’t have to do another typical Sheffield Wednesday summer rebuild.

Expect a new deal for Windass to be one of the club’s priorities this summer after he showed in the last three games of the season just how important a player he is to Sheffield Wednesday.
