Tennis courts at seven Leicester parks are reopening after a £420,000 refurbishment.

In total, 28 tennis courts were refurbished at Abbey Park, Aylestone Hall Gardens, Evington Park, Humberstone Park, Knighton Park, Monks Rest Gardens and Rushey Fields.

Previously all courts were free to use but can now be booked on a pay-and-play basis for £6 per session or £42 annual membership for a family of six, the same as the existing system at Victoria Park.

The works to the courts, carried out by Leicester City Council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), include tarmac, new nets, repainting and new entrance gates.

Community company We Do Tennis will ensure the courts are maintained and organize activities in the parks, including tennis coaching and free sessions for all ages with racquets provided.

“Vital facilities”

A council spokesman told the BBC that revenue from the new booking system would fund the upkeep of the facilities, adding: “The revenue raised by introducing these charges will go back into the repair and maintenance of the courts, safeguarding their future and keeping them in a good condition for years to come.”

Residents with disabilities or people receiving criteria-based benefits will not be charged.

Sean Atterbury, director of neighborhood and environment services, said: “We know how much people value the tennis courts in our parks and this investment and partnership with the LTA and We Do Tennis will ensure that these facilities are well maintained and of a high quality for years to come.

“This partnership will also provide free sessions to encourage more people to enjoy tennis.”

LTA Chief Operating Officer Julie Porter said: “Public tennis courts are vital facilities for getting active and we want as many people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racket and enjoy tennis.”

Free council tennis courts remain available at Aylestone Playing Fields, Mowmacre Sports Ground and Western Park.
