Concerned residents say 50 new homes will ‘change the nature and character of Stocksmoor village forever’

Fifty new homes could be on the way for Stocksmoor, but residents have their concerns.

A planning application from Newett Homes has been submitted to Kirklees Council for a development of 50 homes to be built on 2.5 hectares of green land off Shepley Road. Stocksmoor railway station is to the north of the site.

The properties would range from one to five bedrooms and would be a mix of detached, semi-detached, terraced plus maisonettes. The applicant also proposes that the site be accessed from Shepley Road.

However, ten objections were received in response to the application, with one resident slamming the plans as “totally wrong”. Concerns were raised, including the development’s impact on the area and its wildlife, increased traffic and house numbers.

One resident said: “I don’t think building 50 houses would benefit the local area as it would destroy part of Stone’s Wood, as well as being built in an area not designed for high traffic, which would have 50 new houses. bring.

“This would be most obvious on Shepley Road heading towards Shepley which is almost entirely single track.”

Another wrote: “My husband and I moved to Stocksmoor because it is a small village. Another 50 houses make a major contribution to the number of dwellings in the village – you are effectively building a small estate.
