Leeds United have been told when they can make their first summer transfer move for the rebuild

Holidays, weddings and crucial family moments will dominate the Leeds United players’ days at the moment. Liam Cooper, Ilia Gruev, Charlie Crew, Daniel James, Ethan Ampadu and Junior Firpo could all have international commitments but everyone else will be rested after a tough campaign.

Meanwhile, Daniel Farke and the United hierarchy are, in the words of Paraag Marathe, burning the batteries on their phones to get the club fit as soon as possible. Pre-season traditionally begins as June turns into July, which is already less than four weeks away.

Transfers will be a key part of the conversations taking place between Farke, Marathe, Angus Kinnear, Gretar Steinsson and Nick Hammond. Joe Rodon, Jaidon Anthony and Connor Roberts have returned to their parent clubs, while Sam Byram, Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton are set to see their contracts expire at the end of this month.

As well as these question marks, another year in the Championship will mean United’s best talent is vulnerable to richer vultures with better competition on offer. Additions are needed to give the Whites the experience Farke said they lack, while Marathe has already said he wants more fighters in the dressing room.

Work continues in the background between key people at Elland Road and everyone knows that signings can start to be made on June 14. The summer transfer window opens for a week on Friday and will then remain open for business until 11pm on August 30.

Transfers are unlikely to move to Elland Road on June 14th itself, but this is at least the starting gun in business that many fans will be looking to. The first move involving Leeds since last summer, for example, was Tyler Roberts’ switch to Birmingham City on June 21.

It was a very different summer for so many reasons as we know. With a summer full of scrutiny, Farke will be hoping to see more than just the two arrivals before the end of July, as they did last year with Ethan Ampadu and Karl Darlow.
