Wigan Borough Council has made a ‘safe places’ app available to residents.

It is based on an app developed by technology firm UMAY and offers journey and route planning options, maps with safe locations, where trained volunteers are on hand to provide support and advice and more than 60 of which have been identified across the neighborhood .

It also provides trusted user location alerts, general safety tips and advice, and an option to anonymously alert users to areas deemed unsafe, which directly helps the Community Safety Partnership target areas hotspot to review its safety.

The app launch is being overseen by the Neighborhood Community Safety Partnership.

A safe night

Cllr Dane Anderton, portfolio holder for policing, crime and civil affairs, said: “Everyone has the right to a safe night out and this app is an innovative and affordable way to access important safety advice.

“We encourage residents to download it as its features – including features to share your location with friends and family – build on the good work and messaging of our Community Safety Partnership.”
