HMRC sends £1,331 letter to millions of households

Parents have been told to expect a letter from HMRC in the coming weeks regarding child benefits. Some households may have already received the letter, but it could arrive any time up to July 17.

It will ask parents to confirm their details about whether they still qualify for payments. They will be asked if their child is still in full-time education or training.

Child Benefit is worth up to £1,331 for the first child and £881 for each additional child. Money experts have now explained what parents should do when the letter arrives.

Andy Wood of Crypto Tax Degens said: “Parents will soon receive a letter from HMRC asking them to confirm whether their child remains enrolled in full-time education or training. Remaining eligible for child benefit depends on whether you have a child under 16 (or 20 if the child is in education or training).

“Child Benefit payments add up to a substantial amount, with the potential to reach up to £1,331 a year for the first child and up to £881 a year for each additional child. The letter is due to be sent to all parents between 24 May and July 17 and will contain a QR code directing recipients to the Government.uk website.

“Once there, parents can conveniently renew their child benefit claim online. The UK government has warned that parents have until August 31 to take action or their payments will automatically stop. Although Child Benefit payments are available to all people with children, those with children on higher incomes are required to pay the High Income Child Benefit levy.”
