The Sheffield Wednesday target has tipped to leave on a permanent deal this summer

A Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer target has now been tipped to leave his current club on a permanent deal.

Sheffield Wednesday have a few names on their transfer radar ahead of the summer transfer window opening on June 14.

The Owls are in desperate need of a positive summer transfer window under manager Danny Rohl following the club’s struggles during the 2023/24 campaign.

There is also the likelihood of several key first-team players leaving the club this summer, with Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass among the non-signers, and yet to decide on the club’s latest offer.

Elsewhere, the departure of loan players also opens up gaps in the side, especially in attack; Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo have seen their loan deals expire and it remains to be seen whether the Owls can bring them back or not.

Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday were later linked with a number of attacking signings, with Arsenal striker Mika Biereth among those mentioned.

Mika Biereth Arsenal future amid interest from Sheffield Wednesday

Biereth, 21, was wanted by the Owls in January but instead joined Austrian outfit Sturm Graz on loan.

He went on to score five and assist two more in 15 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga, helping Graz to the league title.

The Austrian side are keen on Biereth’s return, but it has been suggested that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wants to take a closer look at the Danish striker in pre-season.

Now, however, journalist Charles Watts has suggested that Biereth will be allowed to leave this summer, with his contract set to expire next year.

Watts told Inside Arsenal: “I think by far the most likely option this summer with Mika Biereth is to leave, just because of his contract situation, which was very similar to (Folarin) Balogun.”

Balogun spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Reims in Ligue 1, scoring 21 league goals and then earning himself a permanent move to Monaco, with playing time at the Emirates Stadium limited at the time.

Can Sheffield Wednesday afford Mika Biereth?

Biereth’s stock is certainly high. And given his contract situation with Arsenal and the unlikely prospect of Biereth breaking into the Gunners’ first team any time soon, a permanent sale this summer certainly makes sense for Arsenal.

But previous reports have claimed that Biereth’s transfer fee has doubled following his spell with Sturm Graz, with the striker now costing any buying club £5.95m.

That would make him Sheffield Wednesday’s second most expensive signing of all time, and the idea of Dejphon Chansiri spending that amount on any player this summer seems far-fetched.

A loan deal would have been plausible for the Owls, but a permanent deal not so much given its potential cost.

So this latest update may quickly end any hopes Sheffield Wednesday have of a deal for Biereth this summer.
