The free agent is now “preparing to join” Sheffield Wednesday following his release by the Championship club

Sheffield Wednesday are set to complete their first signing of the summer, says Rob Staton.

Sheffield Wednesday have made a positive start to the post-season after agreeing a new three-year deal for manager Danny Rohl.

It comes after the German guided Wednesday to 20th in the Championship last season, becoming the first side to beat the drop in the Championship after going winless in their opening 13 games.

Since then, the Owls appear to have been hard at work finding summer recruits, with several names on Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer radar.

Names such as Ovie Ejaria and Karamoko Dembele have been linked, while Rohl is desperate to re-sign January loan trio James Beadle, Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda.

But it appears the Owls are now set to sign free agent goaltender Ben Hamer.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Ben Hamer

Hamer, 36, was let go from Watford at the end of the 2023/24 season, in which he made 19 league appearances, keeping three clean sheets.

Hamer has 361 career appearances to his name and 109 clean sheets, in spells with all of Bristol City, Reading, Leicester City, Exeter City, Watford, Swansea City, Huddersfield Town, Derby County, Brentford and Charlton Athletic.

The Somerset-born goalkeeper was at his best for Charlton, playing 121 times between 2011 and 2014, winning promotion from League One in 2012.

Now, however, BBC journalist Rob Staton says Hamer is “set to join” Sheffield Wednesday, becoming the Owls’ first signing of the summer.

Ben Hamer at Sheffield Wednesday can mean two things

With Hamer set to join Sheffield Wednesday, he adds an experienced name to a depleted goalkeeping department.

He, Cameron Dawson and Pierce Charles will become the club’s only first-team goalkeepers next season.

But Hamer’s arrival could mean a loan exit for the impressive Charles, who will certainly be keen to play some regular football next term.

And Hamer’s arrival could also cast doubt on a potential Beadle return; Brighton are set to take him on loan this summer, but it remains to be seen whether Sheffield Wednesday can opt out or not.

And whether or not Rohl will push to bring Beadle back with Hamer remains to be seen; Dawson and Hamer are two experienced goaltenders who might like their chances of battling for the No. 1 spot in the upcoming round.

So there is uncertainty about Beadle now. But Hamer is still an experienced signing and if Rohl can bring in Beadle alsothen it will give him a very formidable goalkeeping unit for the 2024/25 season.
