Liam Palmer explains what he is ‘eager’ to do after signing for Sheffield Wednesday

Liam Palmer has set his sights on the 2024-25 season after signing a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday.

Liam Palmer joined the Sheffield Wednesday academy in 1999 before making his senior debut eleven years later.

The defender has since amassed 435 appearances for the Owls but there was concern that his time at Hillsborough would come to an end this summer.

Palmer has been instrumental in rescuing Danny Rohl this term, playing in defense and midfield while avoiding relegation.

It was unclear whether the 32-year-old would be offered a new contract until the club’s retained list was published in May, before he was confirmed to have put pen to paper on a new deal last week.

Palmer joins Barry Bannan in extending his stay at Hillsborough, having spent a total of 34 years at the club between them.

The veteran is now preparing to help the Owls into the top half next season but has also laid out his personal goals.

Liam Palmer wants to move up the table for Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking on the club’s official website, he said: “I’m so grateful for the strong connection with the fans, over time it has built so strongly. With me and Baz signing, it shows our intent. I wanted to sign early and show I was ready to go.

“For the past few seasons, we’ve averaged about 40 games each year. I’m hoping to get close to fifth all-time and then who knows after that.

“Your long-term goals change all the time, but they’re obviously in my mind. It ties in really well with wanting to play as often as possible and hopefully I can have a good pre-season and get off to a good start… I’ve made a lifetime of memories so far and I don’t want that to stop too soon.”

Will he be the regular defender next season?

Liam Palmer will turn 33 in September, but his versatility could still make him a key member of the team.

Sheffield Wednesday will be urged to bring in some new defenders this summer, with free agent Charlie Goode already on the radar.

The Owls shouldn’t rely so much on Palmer if they are able to land their transfer targets, but his leadership, experience and ability to play all over the field can really come in handy.

It would be a real fairy tale if Palmer could finish his career at Hillsborough, although fans will certainly expect his playing time to decrease as they gradually push for the play-offs.

However, it shouldn’t take him too long to climb up the all-time leaderboard with Don Megson in seventh with just seven games to go, while he can break into the top five if he makes 30 appearances next season .
