Live: Croydon Met police chase ends with cyclist fighting for life after officers lose car

A cyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after a MET police chase through Croydon ended with the car in pursuit, driving away from officers. At around 1.05am this morning (Tuesday, June 4), a driver failed to stop for police, leading to a pursuit through Norbury Avenue, just on the border of Thornton Heath and Norbury.

Officers lost the car and a short time later a male cyclist was found injured on Norbury Avenue, leaving him in a critical condition. The crime scene is in place and the suspects have escaped.




A Met Police spokesman said: “A police pursuit was initiated at approximately 1.05am on Tuesday 4 June after a car failed to stop for police. The car fled from the police and got lost.

“A short time later a male cyclist was found injured on Norbury Avenue and the London Ambulance Service attended and the man was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

“His next of kin have been informed. A scene remains in place on Norbury Avenue. Inquiries are continuing to locate the car that drove away from police. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.”

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service (LAS) said: “We were called at 1.13am today (June 4) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a cyclist on Norbury Avenue, Norbury.

“We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a rapid response car and an incident response officer. We also sent a trauma team from the London Air Ambulance which consisted of a doctor and a paramedic in a car.

“Our first paramedics were on the scene in about two minutes.

“We treated a patient at the scene before taking him to a major trauma center.”

Where did the accident happen?

The cyclist was found on Norbury Avenue, SW16. It is a long thin residential road lined with houses. The suspects escaped and the cyclist is currently fighting for his life.
