Great Estate Festival sees ‘weird and wonderful’ scenes via ‘secret entrance’

Sunshine and blue skies welcomed thousands of festival-goers over the weekend as the idyllic grounds of the Scorrier Estate were transformed into a magical evening of music, cabaret and camaraderie. Known for its eccentric approach and plethora of weird and wonderful happenings, this year’s Great Estate Festival saw dinosaurs, bumblebees, flamingos and squirrels roam the gardens accompanied by headline acts from The Darkness, The Stranglers and Soul II Soul.

As the gates opened to mark the seventh edition of Cornwall’s busiest garden fete, guests were led through a ‘secret entrance’ and down a winding tree-lined lane before it spilled over the green hills of the prestigious country estate. Blessed with warm temperatures and a clear night sky, British rock band The Darkness captivated the event on Saturday night with an engaging, high-energy performance. They were followed by Friday’s headliners, iconic legends The Stranglers, who have produced some of the UK’s most memorable singles of the past 40 years.

Sunday’s Great Estate Festival main stage was closed by Soul II Soul with their timeless tree and relaxed party atmosphere. They perform covers of ‘Ghetto Heaven’ and ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ alongside their chart-topping hits including ‘Keep On Movin’ and ‘Back To Life’, the latter leading to a singing and dancing frenzy from the crowd .

Festival directors Ben Hall and Ian Whittaker said: “This year’s Great Estate Festival was one of the best yet, with the sun coming out for another amazing weekend of theatrical installations, quirky happenings and a program of eclectic music”.
