Wigan Athletic agree Jason Kerr new deal amid Wrexham links

Wigan Athletic defender Jason Kerr has penned a new two-year deal with the Latics amid rumored interest from Wrexham and Peterborough United.

The future of Wigan Athletic centre-back Kerr has been up in the air of late, with Wrexham and Peterborough United rumored to be on the prowl as his deal nears expiry.

The Scot had been offered new terms but no announcement had been made when it was claimed the Red Dragons and Posh were eyeing a possible deal.

However, doubts over the fate of Kerr’s transfer have now been put to bed.

As announced on Tuesday morning, the 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a new contract at Wigan Athletic. It keeps him at the DW Stadium until the summer of 2026 and likely ends any possible move elsewhere.

Kerr has been a popular figure at Latics since joining in August 2021 and, having recovered from a long-term injury in the 2023/24 season, will be determined to start again under Shaun Maloney.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Commitment to Latics

While Wrexham, Peterborough United and any other admirers of Kerr will have been hoping for him to move on, the new deal comes as a big boost for Wigan Athletic.

When fit, the defender has shown just how important he can be at the DW Stadium and with a full pre-season under his belt, it will be hoped he can get back to his best after seeing much of the previous campaign disturbed by an accident. .

There is excitement about what next season could bring for Maloney and co at Wigan.

They bounced back brilliantly from the points deduction and are probably left wondering what could have been had they not been restored earlier in the campaign. Latics are likely to be there in the fight for promotion next year and keeping Kerr may be key to that.

Looking elsewhere

With Kerr looking to exit the market, Wrexham and Peterborough United will have to look elsewhere.

Phil Parkinson’s side are well supported financially and have opted for proven players at the above level more often than not in recent years. Whether or not that will continue after promotion to League One remains to be seen.

As for Posh, a move for Kerr would have gone against their usual profile. They tend to favor younger players with promising futures rather than those nearing their prime.

However, they will have to turn their attention to other targets as Wigan Athletic hold onto Kerr.
