The key factor that could see Manchester United finally sign Dan Ashworth

Dan Ashworth’s protracted move to Manchester United is dictated almost entirely by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns, which has evolved into more of a “game of chicken” than a fee clash with Newcastle United.

Newcastle are insisting on a £25million compensation, which has completely blocked a move for the highly-rated sporting director. However, Manchester United feel their leverage over the deal is starting to increase as Newcastle’s preference is for the situation to be resolved within the next six weeks so that the revenue counts in this cycle’s PSR rules.

The PSR allows Premier League clubs to lose up to £105m in each three-season period. Clubs that broke the rules, such as Everton and Nottingham, were hit with point deductions.

Meanwhile, the Old Trafford club are equally aware of how close they are to the limit, with regulations even influencing the decision on Erik ten Hag’s future. Any layoffs would bring considerable compensation, while any potential replacements may command a similar fee. While the situation suggests both clubs will reach an agreement before the June shutdown, there is currently extreme intransigence from both sides over how much it can influence future recruitment decisions.

Another factor is that Ineos would prefer to have Ashworth earlier precisely to be involved in such governance. Manchester United’s new hierarchy have identified him as the top option when it comes to deciding future football strategy.
