Arley abattoir ‘discharge’ problems see Severn Trent

Severn Trent has intervened over ‘discharge’ concerns from an Arley abattoir. It follows complaints raised by local residents about the Glenside abattoir in Ansley Lane, which has increased operations without the council’s permission.

Severn Trent confirmed it had refused an application for the discharge consent because of the risk it posed to the nearby Arley waste water treatment works in Station Road. It meant operations had to be stopped.

It came after Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones stepped in after raising concerns with the water company. In a statement issued to CoventryLive, Severn Trent confirmed that changes have now been made.

Lizzie Frost, Regional Head of Waste Networks at Severn Trent, said: “We have received an application for a discharge consent from this site which has been refused as the quality of the effluent it discharges poses a risk to our treatment works. The company subsequently put their own drainage system on site, which includes locking the visitation to stop any spills into our network.

“Our team has been on site and we are happy with the arrangements they have put in place, which involves storing the waste water in a tank before it is taken off site by tanker.” But there remains an unsolved problem.

These are alterations made to extend the abattoir without planning permission. As a result, a retrospective planning application has been submitted to North Warwickshire Borough Council.
