Leeds United go into the 24/25 Championship season probably in need of more signings and some at full-back, which could be helped by the return of Rasmus Kristensen to the squad.

After relegation, a host of Leeds teams made their intentions clear, jumping ship just weeks into the transfer window by activating loan clauses in their contracts.

For some of that contingent, their time at other clubs hasn’t exactly worked out and leaves the Whites with the need to find an amicable solution.

Leeds need investment at full-back this summer from both sides

As good as Archie Gray has been for Leeds in 23/24 since his debut, there is certainly unanimous agreement that his best football will come while playing in midfield for Leeds, not at right-back.

The problem for Daniel Farke was that he was the club’s best option on the right side of defence, with Djed Spence not worth considering, before being replaced by the disappointing Connor Roberts after Luke Ayling left the club.

It’s hard to rely on Sam Byram for consistent minutes and he doesn’t have the capabilities to link up in the final third with anyone playing on the right wing for Leeds.

It leaves the club certainly in need of a right-back to step up in the summer, but also the depth to mean we won’t have Gray playing there for most of the season like the one just completed.

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

Rasmus Kristensen could help Leeds’ lack of depth

In an ideal world, Leeds manage to recoup acceptable fees for each of the players who left on loan in the summer of 2023 and we can forget the debacle ever happened.

However, this is not the reality of the situation, and some of these will be difficult to transfer for a fee that does not harm our PSR point of view, with an inevitable loss.

Rasmus Kristensen is one of those players, after a fairly average loan spell at Roma under Jose Mourinho and Daniele De Rossi, he is sure not to be re-signed by the Serie A club.

It remains to be seen if the Dane wants to return or if Farke would take him, but with Leeds’ lack of right-backs and tighter finances this summer, it could be that Kristensen plugs a gap in our depth back four. .

We’ve already seen Junior Firpo’s redemption arc bring him full circle to become a club favorite after struggling much in the Premier League, and Kristensen could see this as an opportunity to revive his stalling career.

It’s fair to say he won’t be tested as much in the Championship as he has been over the past two seasons – playing against the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Son Heung-min, Rafa Leao and Kvhicha Kvaratskhelia.

Kristensen was wanted by Leeds for £10m after performing well for Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian top flight, a league where his side dominated possession, which would be expected here.

If it saves us having to fight for an extra right back, it could be worth considering.
