Coventry City have not agreed a deal for Marko Stamenic, report says

Coventry City have not completed a deal for Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Stamenic, according to a report from Coventry Live.

Coventry City will certainly be in the market for some new recruits this summer and many players have already been linked with the Sky Blues.

There was high-profile transfer business last summer following the departures of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer. This year may not see the same level of movement, but some attractive deals will be on the radar.

Most recently, reports in Serbia claimed that Coventry City had completed a £4.26m deal for Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Stamenic.

However, local station Coventry Live has now said it is not the case. They are not completely ruling out the possibility of the 21-time New Zealand international being a target, but no deal has been agreed and no signings are expected this week.

Stamenic, aged 22, has been with Steaua Rosie for a little over a year. He has played 35 times since joining, with two goals and one assist along the way.

New midfielders on the radar?

It looks likely that Coventry City will be in the market for some fresh options in the middle of the park come the summer transfer window.

Ben Sheaf is a wanted man and while the Sky Blues will be keen to keep hold of him, the club have shown before that they will sell at the right price.

Liam Kelly leaves, while the likes of Ryan Howley and Kai Andrews look strong contenders for loan exits.

That would leave the likes of Sheaf, Victor Torp, Josh Eccles and Jamie Allen as midfield options. Adding some new faces to the mix seems like an inevitability, although time will tell if these Stamenic reports turn into anything after being dismissed by local media.

The goal for next season

Coventry City will be determined to earn a place in the play-offs next season after failing to push for the top six this time around. A poor start meant they had a lot of ground to cover and their charge on the table wasn’t enough this time.

Their run to the FA Cup semi-finals ensured this campaign remains one to remember though.

That said, it would be a disappointment if he fell short again. The group got stronger as they went and with the addition of some extra talent, Mark Robins and co will be confident of a return to the play-offs.

A player like Stamenic would help them do that, but it seems claims of an imminent move are out of whack amid this new update.
