Sheffield Wednesday are vying with Championship clubs to sign the Ghanaian ace permanently

Sheffield Wednesday have joined the race to sign the Ghanaian midfielder who currently plays in Europe.

Sheffield Wednesday appear to have quickly compiled a list of summer transfer targets and it looks like Danny Rohl could soon have his first signing.

Free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer looks set to join following his release from Watford in May, meaning Cameron Dawson will leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

The Owls remain keen on James Beadle, with Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda also wanted to return to Hillsborough for next season.

Other names linked before the summer transfer window opens on June 14 include Ovie Ejaria, Karamoko Dembele, Duncan McGuire, Charlie Goode and Mika Biereth.

And now there’s another name on the Owls’ transfer radar; Elfsborg’s Ghanaian midfielder Michael Baidoo.

A report emerging from Swedish outlet FotbollDirekt says that Sheffield Wednesday have joined the race to sign Baidoo this summer.

Who is Sheffield Wednesday visa Michael Baidoo

Baidoo, 25, currently plays for Swedish Allsvenskan outfit Elfsborg, who are currently ranked 9th in the Swedish top flight.

Central midfielder Baidoo has started the season in fine form, having scored four and assisted a further three in 12 league appearances so far.

Last round, Baidoo scored five and assisted six in 28 Allsvenskan appearances, now his third with Elfsborg this season.

Born in Accra, Baidoo has represented Ghana at U20 level in the past, starting his career with Danish side FC Midtjylland, then had spells with Jerv and Sandnes in Norway before joining Elfsborg in 2022.

In 69 appearances for his current club, Baidoo has 18 goals and 12 assists.

Where would Michael Baidoo fit in at Sheffield Wednesday

Watching his highlights above, it’s clear to see the type of player Baidoo is; he is a goal-scoring midfielder who can burst up and down the pitch and be clinical in both boxes.

What seems most impressive is his finishing ability; for a midfielder, he shows great composure and awareness in front of goal, with many of his goals coming from close range.

Rohl really doesn’t have a goal-scoring central midfielder in his ranks and with the likes of Will Vaulks out of contract and Jeff Hendrick and Momo Diaby departing, an already depleted midfield department is now even thinner.

So there is a need for midfielders and the younger ones with this current aging Owls squad. Baidoo fits the bill in this regard, and the fact that they could add goals to the side is a bonus.

Furthermore, he has shown with his runs from deep and runs at goal that he is someone with pace and energy who will serve him well in a Rohl-style setup.

Sheffield Wednesday should avoid stiff competition for his signature with Luton Town, Hull City and Middlesbrough among the other keen sides.

But if the Owls can win the race for Baidoo, who would cost a fee this summer with his contract up in 2025, it would be a very interesting signing indeed.
