Sheffield Wednesday have asked to ‘cash in’ on the player who last started a league game in November

Carlton Palmer has urged Sheffield Wednesday to offload a player this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s squad numbers have already dropped dramatically since the end of the season.

The Owls have released six players, while another seven have left the club at the end of loan spells.

Meanwhile, Wednesday are still in talks with five players over contract extensions after Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer put pen to paper last week.

Danny Rohl is keen to overhaul the squad as he looks to shake off the dead wood and build a squad capable of finishing in the top half.

Although he has done a good job so far, one player who remains among the ranks is Mallik Wilks.

The forward joined Wednesday from Hull City in 2022 and has managed just three goals in 42 appearances while not starting a game since November.

There has been some interest in signing Wilks but he is yet to progress anywhere, however former midfielder Carlton Palmer has urged the club to sell him this summer.

It’s time for Mallik Wilks to leave Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said: “Charlton, Reading and Stockport are reported to be interested in the services of Mallik Wilks.

“Is the time right for Sheffield Wednesday to move him on? Yes, I 100% believe it is. His league record is poor. At Sheffield Wednesday in two seasons, he scored one goal in 31 appearances.

“He scores goals in League One, he scored 16 goals in one season and 22 goals in another season. So I think it’s time for Sheffield Wednesday to cash in.

“He will not receive the goals in the championship. He’s got tremendous pace but like I said, he’s not going to get their goals in the Championship and they need better quality than that at that level.

“So a loan or possibly a permanent move for Mallik from Sheffield Wednesday to free up some funds to bring in someone of better quality at that level.

“He won promotion with Hull City and on Wednesday at that level, there is nobody at that level who has a better contribution with one in two goals.

“So yes, that’s the level he needs to play at and I’m sure Sheffield Wednesday will look to do a deal to let Mallik leave the football club permanently or on loan and bring in someone else who can. perform at that level.”

Offloading their salary can be a huge boost for the Owls

Mallik Wilks’ stats at Sheffield Wednesday have been dire, failing to score a goal since being promoted.

He is clearly a League One striker and after his previous success in the third tier with Hull and Doncaster, Wednesday should have no problem landing him.

It’s unclear how much the Owls could stand to gain from his exit, but taking his big wages off the bill would be hugely beneficial.

Wilks is said to earn almost £12,000 a week – more than the likes of Dominic Iorfa, Di’Shon Bernard and Anthony Musaba.

The striker will certainly have to take a pay cut to drop back down to League One, but as long as he frees up space for the Owls then it certainly wouldn’t be their problem.
