Coventry City ‘transfer bombshell’ as Red Star Belgrade man claims he was ‘sold’ for €5m

Coventry City are said to have paid £4.26m for Red Star Belgrade star Marko Stamenic, claim Serbian sports outlet Sportal.rs.

The online publication labeled the story a “transfer bombshell”, saying it was a “spectacular” deal by the Belgrade club, otherwise known as FK Crvena Zvezda, claiming they sold the holding midfielder for just “a staggering 5 million euro”. a year after joining the free club in Copenhagen.

The report says the 22-year-old New Zealand international was “one of the most responsible for Zvezda winning their fourth consecutive double crown” in the Serbian SuperLiga – and the club’s seventh consecutive title.

CoventryLive understands, however, that the report is stretched and that the Sky Blues have not agreed a deal with Red Star and nothing is imminent in terms of new signings. That’s not to say Mark Robins’ recruitment department doesn’t know about Stamenic or hasn’t looked at the player, but as it stands, City aren’t expected to announce any new players this week.

It is unclear exactly how much the Championship club will spend this summer and much could depend on whether City receive a significant cash boost from Viktor Gyokeres’ sell-on clause should the Sweden international be sold by Sporting Lisbon after a splendid season in Portugal.

The summer transfer window doesn’t officially open until next week (Friday, June 14), although that hasn’t stopped the Sky Blues from making their first signing of the close season with the arrival of winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues for an undisclosed fee from the Australian. A-League club Macarthur FC.
