The waste management business is expanding with the launch of another site

Rotherham-based waste management specialist KCM is expanding its services in Sheffield.

The company, which was launched in Rotherham in 1989 by brothers Mark and Philip Hickling and now includes three generations of the Hickling family, is based on an eight-acre site on Ginhouse Lane in Rotherham and employs over 140 people.

Now the company has acquired a two-acre derelict waste site at Cricket Inn Road in Sheffield and, following a major upgrade programme, is bringing its full range of services to the city.

Services include dumpster rental, household waste, commercial dumpster and collection, aggregate and tipper rental, confidential and secure document disposal, legal electrical and electronic waste disposal, tipping and recycling, wagon rental and hazardous waste disposal.

KCM already deals with around 75,000 tonnes of waste each year, all of which is currently sorted and graded at its Ginhouse Lane site.

Managing director Gareth Hickling said: “The fact that everything is sorted by hand makes us quite unique in the area.

“Regardless of the level of waste or its source, our aim is to recycle to the highest specification, ensuring that the least amount of material possible ends up in landfill.

“We know that wood, metals, plastics and even simple garden waste can be recycled if properly sorted and we even already have two biomass plants on site.

“Primarily, only asbestos and abrasives remain until the end of our rigorous sorting process, and these are then safely disposed of following all current industry guidelines.”

The new Cricket Inn Road depot was a two acre derelict and polluted waste disposal site which was cleaned up and refurbished by the KCM team in collaboration with the Environment Agency and Sheffield City Council.

Gareth Hickling added: “KCM already serves Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Worksop and surrounding areas, but this new site is a major step forward in our major expansion plans.

“We are a proud family business with our roots firmly planted in Rotherham and South Yorkshire, and this move to Sheffield reflects the scale of our ambitions for the future.

“We’re not just a fairy tale rental business, we’re experts in total waste management.

“We already have many existing customers in Sheffield, so being able to transport their waste to the new site will have a major impact on our carbon footprint.

“As Cricket Inn Road becomes firmly established, we will also be looking to expand our workforce, bring new jobs to the town and it is also important to us that the money earned by KCM is invested back into South Yorkshire .”
