The drama unfolded this morning shortly after the plane took off from the capital’s airport.

It is understood the crew initially raised the alarm after becoming concerned for the welfare of a passenger.

The passenger received medical treatment after landing in Bristol, before police arrested a man in connection with a “secret tip”.

Officers from Avon and Somerset Police boarded the plane and took the man into custody over the alleged incident, which is the subject of an ongoing investigation.

A spokesman for the force said: “A Jet2 flight from Edinburgh to Ibiza was safely diverted to Bristol Airport this morning.

“The crew expressed concern about a passenger, who received medical attention on landing.

“The attending officers subsequently received information which led to the arrest of a male passenger suspected of a sex offence, who was taken into custody.

“We can confirm that this relates to an alleged incident on board the aircraft.

A Jet2 spokesman added: “We can confirm that flight LS789 from Edinburgh to Ibiza diverted to Bristol Airport earlier so that police could offload a passenger following an incident on board.

“As this is a police matter we cannot comment further at this stage.
