Reports link All Whites’ Marko Stamenić with $8.8m move to English club

New Zealand international midfielder Marko Stamenić is set to move from Serbian club FK Crvena Zvezda to English club Coventry City for a transfer fee of US$8.8 million.

Serbian news site Sport says Stamenić will join the Championship club in a €5,000,000 deal just a year after the New Zealander signed with Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) as a free agent.

Another football news site, Mozart Sports, report that the Serbian club will also receive 10% of any future fee paid for a transfer of the All White, who has 21 caps for his country.

How Sportal reported the news about Marko Stamenić.

Neither his current club nor Coventry City have publicly acknowledged that a deal is underway, although Stamenić’s Wikipedia page has been edited to suggest he is a Coventry player.

Coventry City finished ninth in England’s second tier last season.

Stamenić (22) played 35 matches for Crvena Zvezda, scoring two goals and being credited with one assist. He helped them to a league cup double in the season just ended.

In 2023, Stamenić became the first New Zealander to score in the UEFA Champions League in nearly 30 years, emulating the feat of All Whites forward Wynton Rufer.

Wellington-born Stameniċ played his youth football for Western Suburbs before heading overseas in 2020 for his first professional contract with Danish Superliga club Copenhagen.
