Leicester City reject Mansfield Town’s bid for centre-back Lewis Brunt

Leicester City have rejected Mansfield Town’s bid for centre-back Lewis Brunt, Stags boss Nigel Clough has confirmed.

Leicester City defender Brunt spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan, linking up with Mansfield Town in League Two.

The 23-year-old has become a Stag regular, featuring mainly in his natural role at the heart of defense in his 40 appearances for the club. Brunt has also been deployed in the defensive midfield at times as he has impressed at Field Mill.

After playing a predominant role in Clough’s promotion winning side, there were calls for him to be brought back to the club permanently.

However, it has now been confirmed that Mansfield have failed with a bid for the former Aston Villa talent.

Speaking to The Chad, Clough confirmed that Leicester City have rejected a bid for Brunt and their valuations may be too far apart to reach a permanent deal. The head of the city explained:

“We made an offer where it was rejected and unfortunately we may be too far off in terms of their valuation and what we can pay.

“But we will keep trying and we always have the loan option as well. Negotiations are ongoing.

“We certainly don’t rule it out. He remains our number one target.”

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

A return still possible?

While Mansfield Town could come up short in their bid to sign Brunt permanently, Clough has made it clear there are still routes to bring the Leicester City man back.

Another loan deal wouldn’t be the end of the world. In the end, he makes sure to return to the club, though not quite in the capacity they had hoped for.

A loan could also leave the door open to a future business. Brunt’s deal at Leicester runs until 2025 and, given he is fairly low down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium, new terms may be unlikely.

That could allow him to move on a free transfer next summer, and if he were to spend another year on loan at Mansfield, it could make a permanent signing more feasible.

Alternatives in mind

While the door is certainly not closed on a Brunt reunion, Mansfield Town will have alternatives to the Leicester City man in mind if a deal cannot be reached.

If they can’t meet the asking price, that could pave the way for another club to swoop in and pry him from under the Stags’ noses, which could certainly be a blow.

Should that happen, Mansfield will have to turn to alternative targets. They would likely be looking to do so quickly too as they prepare to return to League One football.

Time will tell how the Brunt saga plays out, but all hope is not lost as Town target a deal.
