The Leicestershire town “could receive millions of pounds” if the Tories win the election, Tories claim

A Leicestershire town could get millions of pounds worth of investment if the Tories win the general election, the party has claimed. Wigston is one of 30 towns flagged by the Tories to receive £20m each over 10 years if First Minister Rishi Sunak’s party is elected by voters on July 4.

The funding would be the latest round of the government’s “long-term plan for cities” scheme, which is designed to help improve high streets, help residents feel safer and “improve connectivity”, a spokesman said of the party. Neil O’Brien, Conservative candidate for Harborough, Oadby and Wigston, said Wigston’s inclusion in the latest round of allocations was “fantastic news”. He said the money would “help get rid of graffiti, regenerate empty shops and tackle anti-social behaviour”.

The party claimed that local residents would help decide how the money would be used through a new “city council”. Mr Sunak said: “This bold move will transform a further 30 towns and cities – reviving their high streets, boosting local economies and making people proud of the place they call home.”

Leveling Up Secretary Michael Gove added: “This bold action will be transformative for cities across the country. It will allow local people to take control – creating better jobs, improving transport and generating more investment.”

Mr O’Brien said: “We have needed a plan for our local streets for years and this huge investment is exactly what we need. The money from town funding will allow us to spruce up town centers and make them look good. good again It will enable us to get rid of graffiti, regenerate empty shops and tackle anti-social behaviour.”

Wigston is one of the Leicestershire areas the Conservatives will be hoping to retain at the general election. The Labor Party has chosen Hajira Piranie to fight for O’Brien’s seat. For other candidates for the seat and those from Leicester and the rest of the county, see our article here.
