Following his move to the Gills, he described how he would look to improve people for the benefit of the team.

He said: “I like working with individuals, really focusing on the technical details. I think this is very important.

“Spending time and building relationships with the players, working with them as individuals first and then helping them collectively and as a team, so (it’s about) that individual focus and making sure we can improve people to create a better team , that’s my philosophy.

“I will go through as much footage of the players as possible to make sure I have the best picture of each player and then I can help them from day one.

“I’m going to watch as many games and videos as possible on my laptop.”

One player who will need no introduction is quarterback Shad Ogie.

As head of the youth team at Leyton Orient, he brought the defender out of the Hornchurch youth academy. It was at Orient where Ogie eventually turned professional, playing 44 games before moving to the Gills.

Gill, who currently lives in Ebbsfleet, has known the club’s goalkeeping coach Deren Ibrahim since they were children and coached him at Charlton at the same time as new assistant Anthony Hayes.

He previously worked with boss Gills Bonner at Cambridge United and said: “I think I understand him and how he wants to work, his values and ethics on and off the pitch and, importantly, I understand how that translates on the pitch.

“(The opportunity) to work with Mark and the rest of the staff was a no-brainer for me (to join) and I can’t wait to get started.”
