The Premier League club’s latest transfer deal looks good news for Leeds’ hopes of signing an ‘amazing’ player

It’s been a quiet 10 days at Leeds United since their play-off final defeat to Southampton last month.

While there will be plenty of work going on behind the scenes, with the window not officially opening until June 14, this is the short period in football where people have a chance to pause.

Once things get going, it’s certainly expected to be a busy window at Leeds as failure to win promotion is likely to see key players exit.

However, chairman Paraag Marathe insisted there will be funds available to spend and Leeds will have a squad more than capable of going one better next season.

With that in mind, Leeds will be looking to bring in high-quality replacements for those leaving, whether on loan, in the free agent market or even permanent signings.

Why Chelsea’s deal for Tosin Adarabioyo is good news for Leeds

Leeds didn’t make any signings until the third week of July last summer and that slow start to the season was a major factor in their decline.

Marathe has already suggested that Leeds will be looking to avoid those mistakes this time around, and that shouldn’t be too difficult given there is already clarity around the ownership and managerial situations, unlike 12 months ago.

However, for Championship clubs seeking Premier League loans, sometimes patience can be a virtue. Especially with young players, managers often want to take a look at them in pre-season before deciding whether to send them on or even sign them.

Last summer was a prime example as all three of Leeds’ loanees in Joe Rodon, Djed Spence and Jaidon Anthony didn’t join until early August.

This time, however, Leeds have already been linked with a possible loan signing, with Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist on their radar.

And while loan signings tend to come later in the window, this could be a fast-moving one depending on the business Chelsea do.

According to Fabrizio Romano, centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo underwent a trial at Stamford Bridge yesterday before sealing his move on a free transfer.

Adarabioyo will become the seventh centre-back in Enzo Maresca’s squad and that already rules out any first-team action for Gilchrist next season despite his recent progress.

That means Chelsea could be prepared to make a quick decision about sending him on, and so if Leeds are indeed keen, a deal needs to be done quickly.

What Mauricio Pochettino said about Leeds is aimed at Gilchrist

As mentioned, Gilchrist was given plenty of first-team opportunities at Chelsea last season by Mauricio Pochettino, a manager who has since been replaced.

Gilchrist made 15 appearances in all competitions, including starting in the FA Cup win against Leeds. He also managed to score his first senior goal against Everton.

This was clearly a huge moment for the childhood Chelsea fan, with Pochettino hailing him as “amazing” after that game.

He said: β€œHe’s an amazing guy in the way he works, he’s always available. He’s the kind of player you want in your team.”
