Man, 25, arrested after allegedly shooting himself in Braunstone Town incident

Investigations are underway in Leicestershire after a gun was reportedly fired in Braunstone Town yesterday. Police were called to The Glade shortly before 10am on Tuesday (June 4) following reports of a “firearm being discharged”.

Armed officers were sent to the scene “in the interests of public safety”, a force spokesman said. No injuries were reported.

The police arrested a 25-year-old man, being suspected of possessing a firearm, he remains in police custody. Police said that following further investigation, an abandoned vehicle was found by officers. A cordon was placed around the vehicle and several homes were evacuated. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and other specialist teams then assisted in a controlled explosion.

The cordon was later lifted following EOD investigations, all residents returned to their properties. All road closures related to the operation have since been removed and roads have been reopened. Police said noises heard earlier Tuesday afternoon were related to the presence of the EOD team in the area.

Police remain in the area to provide reassurance, the force’s spokesman said. Investigations into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing, they added.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to call Leicestershire Police on 101, quoting incident 160 of June 4. Alternatively, provide information on the force’s website.
