Massimo Luongo hailed him for the ‘great’ thing he has done since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in 2022

Massimo Luongo has received high praise two years after leaving Sheffield Wednesday.

Massimo Luongo joined Sheffield Wednesday from QPR in 2019 and made just 17 starts in his first season before his injury record worsened.

The midfielder was sent off on three separate occasions in his second campaign, including missing the final three months and making just 13 appearances in total.

He went on to make just one appearance in the first three months of the 2021/22 campaign, before managing to stay fit for most of the second half of the season as they reached the play-offs.

Luongo had five assists and was named Player of the Month for January, as well as appearing in two EFL Teams of the Week.

However, he continued to reject a new contract and left the club to join Middlesbrough in 2022.

Even then things didn’t quite work out for him, who lasted just four months at the Riverside Stadium before his contract was voided, failing to make an appearance.

Luongo then joined Ipswich Town on a free transfer and has enjoyed much more success since, making 43 appearances this season and playing a key role in winning back-to-back Premier League promotions.

Massimo Luongo is a ‘nice guy’

Star journalist Joe Crann was eager to praise the 31-year-old, whose story has turned out “superb” after a tough few years.

He wrote on X: “Really excited for Massimo Luongo… He was such a nice guy to interview. He couldn’t get a break with us, he’s dealt with so many injuries, he’s had a tough time at Boro – now he’s fit every week and he’s a Premier League footballer. A great story.”

His story should give Sheffield Wednesday hope

Massimo Luongo was always an undeniable talent, but it was hard to get the best out of him when he was always on the treatment table.

However, he had much better luck at Ipswich and became a player that Sheffield Wednesday and many other clubs would really appreciate in their ranks.

Luongo and Ipswich’s move from League One to the top flight is inspirational though, and one that the Owls should certainly have high hopes for.

Their success would certainly have been cause for jealousy had Wednesday been relegated, but if they can keep hold of Danny Rohl then there’s no reason why they can’t be the next shocker at the top of the Championship.
