A 12-year-old boy dies in a tragic accident while cycling with his father

A 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life in a cycling incident while out with his father, an inquest heard. The inquest into the death of Rufus Odin Borneo Pomeroy, of Easton, Bristol, was opened this morning (Wednesday, June 5) by Senior Coroner Graeme Hughes at Pontypridd Crown Court.

The coroner was told that on Tuesday, May 28, Rufus and his father were enjoying a bike ride near Hay-on-Wye. During their off-road adventure, Rufus’ father paused to close a gate behind him as Rufus continued down a steep downhill section, reports Wales Online.

When Rufus’ father caught up, he discovered his unconscious son, who had fallen backwards from a collision. Emergency services were called and Rufus was rushed to Hereford County Hospital where he tragically died.

His death was reported by Herefordshire Coroners on May 29 and the case is now being overseen by South Wales Coroners. Rufus’ provisional cause of death was recorded as catastrophic head injury from a road traffic accident.

The investigation will resume at a later date. Earlier this week, staff at Redland Green School attended by Rufus paid tribute to the “loved and valued member” of the school community.

Director Ben Houghton said: “I would like to express our sincere thoughts and condolences to Rufus’ family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We are devastated at the loss of such a lovely and valued member of our school community.”
