Has Erik ten Hag been fired? Timeline, verdict and everything we know about Man United’s decision

Manchester United are still reviewing the 2023/24 season before making a decision on Erik ten Hag’s future as manager.

United’s campaign ended with a triumphant 2-1 win over rivals City in the FA Cup final, capping off an otherwise disappointing year in the majors. They were kicked out of the Champions League at the group stage, exited the Carabao Cup early and finished the Premier League season in eighth place.

Here’s everything we currently know about the review, the Ten Hag job, the takeover candidates and what lies ahead in a crucial summer at Old Trafford.

What’s next at Man United – the review

It is now more than a week since the Ten Hag and his players paraded onto the Wembley pitch with the FA Cup in hand.

As MEN reported on May 28, United were not expected to make a decision on Ten Hag’s future immediately after the cup final, despite reports circulating even before the game that the Dutchman would be sacked – regardless of the result at Wembley.

Sources at the club said United were still reviewing their season, although it was also suggested United could make the announcement at some point this week. United will not provide a current comment on the situation to the media, but the review is close to completion.

Officially, Ten Hag has a contract that lasts for another year, with an option to extend it for another 12 months.

But that – not even the FA Cup win – will deter United from making the decision to sack him if that’s what their review concludes.

New chief executive Omar Berrada doesn’t start until July 13 but is said to be getting his hands dirty already, involved in the review along with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Sir Dave Brailsford, technical director Jason Wilcox and others. United want Dan Ashworth to run their football department as sporting director, but he is still on gardening leave from Newcastle.

Who intends to take the job – the competitors

Kieran McKenna has been linked with managerial vacancies at Chelsea and Brighton, but his preference was to take over at United if favored by the hierarchy. In the end, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s former assistant opted to sign a new contract at current club Ipswich, so he would appear to be out of the running.

Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino are now the main frontrunners to become United’s next manager. Both men would relish the chance to manage United, with Pochettino coveted by the club for years and admired by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Argentinian is 11/8 favorite with most bookmakers to land the job, with Tuchel 5/2. Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Frank and Gareth Southgate are the others linked with the job. The latter seems unlikely given United’s desire to make a firm decision in the coming weeks; Southgate is linked with England’s Euro 2024 campaign for at least the rest of this month.

What is Ten Hag doing now?

It is understood that Ten Hag is currently taking a holiday as planned after the end of the season. He has repeatedly stated that he has not been given assurances about his United future in interviews following the FA Cup final. He awaits the call to stay or go.

Reports this week indicate that Ten Hag will find out by the end of the week if he still has a job. United have contacted the agents of other potential managers.
