Police are issuing an update on the incident in Braunstone Town after a gun was allegedly fired

A man remains in custody after allegedly shooting himself in Leicestershire. Residents were forced to evacuate as bomb disposal teams were called in during the incident.

Officers were first called to The Glade, in Braunstone Town, shortly before 10am on Tuesday (June 4) following reports of a gun being fired in the area. Armed officers were sent to the scene “in the interest of public safety”, police said.



A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. No injuries were reported during the incident.

During the investigation, officers found an abandoned vehicle and specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called to carry out a controlled explosion. Residents in the area were evacuated and several roads were closed as part of the operation.

All roads have since been reopened and affected residents have returned home. Leicestershire Police said its officers are maintaining a presence in the area today (Wednesday, June 5) as inquiries continue.

Inspector Matt Allingham, Neighborhood Policing Area Commander for Blaby, where Braunstone Town is located, said: “We would like to thank local residents and the local community for their support, co-operation and understanding during the initial incident yesterday and as we continue. with our questions today. This is greatly appreciated.

“Our officers remain in the area today to speak with you and continue to offer any advice and reassurance. Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing today and we continue to ask anyone with any information to get in touch. Please also speak to our officers in the area about any concerns you may have as we continue to progress with our enquiries.”
