Five players Manchester United could target in cut-price transfer deals this summer

With just over a week until the summer transfer window opens, the number of players linked with a move to Manchester United is starting to grow.

United have ambitions to change the landscape of their squad this summer as they prepare for a fresh start under the guidance of Ineos. Player outflows could hit double figures, meaning there could be some transfer activity in the coming months.

However, United will have to take into account the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, meaning they will be forced to box smart with their business. It’s no secret that they need to raise funds through player sales this summer.

Despite departures outstripping arrivals, United need fresh blood this summer. The club has identified the centre-back, central midfield and attacking departments as the main areas they intend to strengthen, but other departments need freshening up.

Given the, MEN Sports picked five players whose contracts expire in June 2025 who could be available for reduced fees.

With just 12 months left on his current contract, right-back Walker-Peters will inevitably be linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer. Southampton’s chances of keeping him had they failed to win promotion last month would have been nil, but even then they will face a battle to retain his services.

Excellent offensively, the former Tottenham Hotspur man has all the credentials to be a modern full-back. He is comfortable on the ball and likes to move inside. He is also fast and very athletic.

Diogo Dalot deserves to remain United’s first-choice right-back next season, but Walker-Peters would be a reliable back-up if Aaron Wan-Bissaka is moved on. Jason Wilcox’s Southampton links could also boost United’s chances if they were to fancy him.

How long have United been linked with Dumfries? It feels like years, probably because it is.

He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford frequently in recent transfer windows and is no different ahead of this summer’s window. United need to inject fresh life into the right-back area if Wan-Bissaka is offloaded, and Dumfries could feature in the conversations.

With plenty of experience at the highest level, he carries a great attacking threat and is a physical operator. Reports overseas in recent weeks have claimed that he would like to move to the Premier League and the fact that his Inter contract expires in a year’s time means they could be prepared to sanction an exit to avoid losing him on a free for 12 months . the line.

Lille centre-back Yoro is being linked with a host of big-name clubs ahead of this summer’s transfer window. The 18-year-old enjoyed a stellar 2023/24 campaign in France, making 44 appearances in all competitions. Having been linked with United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the gossip columns, it shows how highly rated the Frenchman is and how big the battle to sign him could be this summer.

United are crying out for fresh legs at centre-back and capturing one of Europe’s hottest properties would send a statement of intent. However, the other three clubs linked to him will be more attractive options. Lille will almost certainly cash in this summer in an attempt to secure the biggest fee possible.

Fofana has already confirmed that he has an agreement with Monaco to leave the club if a club comes in with serious ambitions to sign him. United have been linked with him for some time and could provide the missing link in midfield.

A magnet for the ball, often tirelessly pressing opponents, he loves the “dirty side” of the game. Not turning 26 until January, he would be an option to become Casemiro’s successor at the base of United’s midfield. Some reports have suggested he could be available for less than £20m this summer. Arsenal have also been linked with his signature.

With just 12 months left on Toney’s contract at Brentford, it is a certainty that he will be linked with almost every member of the Premier League elite this summer. He has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most prolific goalscorers since Brentford were promoted in 2021.

United are looking to sign another striker this summer, but it remains to be seen whether they will target someone to beat Rasmus Hojlund, play alongside him or provide him with some competition.

After what they threw the Danes through less than a year ago, you’d argue they should be looking for a back-up option. Toney, despite his contract status, might be a bit too expensive to play as a backup power forward, but could be perfect as a regular starter. There are caveats to this, but Toney’s contract situation makes him one to watch.
