Man City star Kyle Walker couldn’t resist a cheeky dig when asked the Sheffield Wednesday question

Kyle Walker issued a little dig at Sheffield Wednesday on a recent podcast.

Born in Sheffield, Kyle Walker joined Sheffield United’s academy at the age of seven.

The defender managed just a handful of appearances before attracting the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, but was subsequently loaned back to his boyhood club.

Walker left his hometown for good in 2010, but still managed to dig in at Sheffield Wednesday 14 years later.

When asked who he supported as a child You’ll never beat Kyle Walker podcast, the 34-year-old said: “Sheffield United. It was never going to be Sheffield Wednesday, no. Impossible. My dad is a Leeds fan though.”

Walker ended up playing just one game against the Owls, following his second spell at Bramall Lane.

Wednesday were beaten by the Blades in September 2009, with the hosts leading 3-0 inside 15 minutes.

However, the visitors looked likely to mount a terrific comeback, with Marcus Tudgay and Etienne Esajas grabbing two.

However, Wednesday failed to equalize and they were forced to suffer their first derby defeat in three years, while they did not lose again until 2017.

Since then, Walker has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and the Champions League with Manchester City.

He is one of many brilliant footballers born in Sheffield, with the likes of Harry Maguire and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also born in the area.

Jamie Vardy is a player who started his career at Middlewood Road but was released when he was 16 years old. However, he made his support for Wednesday very clear as he has shone for Leicester and England over the years.

Yorkshire really seem to be hotbeds of excellent footballers and Wednesday will be hoping they see some future stars under Danny Rohl now.
