‘It will only add to the burden’ Huddersfield villagers furious at plans for 140-home estate

Brockholes residents are worried about plans to expand a 137-home estate.

The massive development from Miller Homes is being brought to a plot of land between Brockholes and Honley, off the A6024 Woodhead Road. Kirklees Council approved the plans as early as July 2022, although residents are concerned about the number of homes and the impact this would have on the area.

Now Miller Homes has submitted a new application for four more homes to be built on the adjacent land. If approved, this would bring the total number of homes on the site to 141, however local residents have spoken out against the plans.

One resident said he did not want the proposed new scheme to “add burden” to existing development. They commented: “Continued development around Honley is hugely affecting basic infrastructure, particularly schools, health services and the road network. All these areas are under huge stress and the number of housing estates is increasing all these problems.”

Another wrote: “I strongly believe that adding additional houses to this existing scheme will have a detrimental effect on the character of the area. This is a semi-rural location and the current plans were passed without objection as they promised a large green space for all to enjoy. This is now being eroded to the detriment of the local community.”

Holme Valley Parish Council also opposed the plans due to fears of over-intensification, poor infrastructure and the absence of a climate change statement.

A document from Miller Homes says: “The design team proposed a viable residential development which makes a positive contribution to the wider settlement. A careful approach to house types, movement, natural features and site context ensures a high quality living environment for new residents.”
