Cornwall police officer sent highly offensive messages to another woman

A Cornwall police officer has admitted sending indecent and highly offensive communications with the intent to cause distress or anxiety to another woman. PC Jess Smith, 32, from Hayle, was initially arrested and released on bail in August 2022 and has since been suspended from duty.

At Exeter Crown Court, Smith today pleaded guilty to the Communications Act offence, which relates to incidents which took place between May 2021 and May 2022.

The prosecutor’s office said the plea to that charge was acceptable and a jury trial was no longer required. Smith, who cried as she entered her plea, will be sentenced in July after a pre-sentence report is prepared.

Smith, who worked for Devon and Cornwall Police as an officer in Penzance and elsewhere, was due to stand trial this month. The trial was expected to last a week.
