Sheffield Wednesday have begun to say goodbye to Cameron Dawson

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is set to leave Hillsborough for a new challenge, The Star have reported.

Sheffield Wednesday have had the Dawson marksman since bringing him through the academy in the summer of 2012.

From there, he worked his way through the youth ranks and Hillsborough while spending a number of loan spells.

Dawson has been a regular in the first-team picture in recent years, taking his total appearances for the club to 129. In that time, he has kept a total of 47 clean sheets, despite losing his starting spot to James Beadle earlier this year. .

Now, with the deal completed, the 28-year-old is set to move on from the Owls.

As reported by The Star, Dawson is ready to turn down a new deal in favor of a new challenge. He is expected to have plenty of options elsewhere as he explores pastures new ahead of next season.

A new chapter awaits you

If he is to head to free agency, Dawson should have a good choice of options regarding his next move.

He has Championship and League One experience, impressing at both levels. He would be a strong signing for a club at the top of the third tier, but is certainly capable of fighting for a starting place at one of Wednesday’s division rivals as well.

The goalkeeper had a good run in the side when Danny Rohl arrived last season, taking the starting spot back from loanee Devis Vasquez.

However, Beadle’s arrival dropped him back to the bench and with further goalkeeping signings expected this summer, Dawson would likely have been pushed down the pecking order again ahead of next season.

The goalkeeper department

Former loan ace Beadle has been heavily linked with a return to Sheffield Wednesday and it looks like there will be another addition between the sticks.

Ben Hamer is also said to be joining on a free transfer, although his arrival will not affect the pursuit of the Owls’ Beadle, with talks still ongoing over a reunion.

If the two join, that would leave Rohl with Beadle, Hamer and starlet Pierce Charles to choose from in goal. This is shaping up to be a strong goaltending department with a good balance of experience and promising youth.

That said, it seems a Dawson departure is ideal for all, as he wants to move away from Hillsborough.
