In 2016, longtime friends Aaron Hamilton and Wess Gregg founded Sanctum Comics and Tattoos in Avondale. Both shared a passion for comics and had experience working at other comic shops in the Birmingham area, including The Comic Strip and Kingdom Comics.

“I’ve been a tattoo artist for 20 years, but I’ve always wanted to open my own comic shop. I couldn’t run both businesses by myself, so I reached out to Wess to see if he would be interested in doing it with me. He was easily bribed, so it worked!”

At Sanctum, you’ll find a wide variety of comics and more, including:

  • New comics available every Wednesday (New Comic Day)
  • Back problems
  • Classic comics
  • Graphic novels
  • Paperback books

“Our personal tastes lean more towards alternative comics, but we have something for everyone! Whatever you can think of, we carry.”

In addition to comics, Sanctum has a full tattoo studio for its three artists, available by appointment only:

Sanctum Tattoos and Comics recently left their home of eight years in Avondale for a new space in downtown Birmingham.

“We’re friends with the owner of the building and he fixed this place up around the time we started looking for a new location. We have more space here and the location is great.”
