York Knights announce restructure as Andrew Henderson steps down as head coach

Mark Applegarth has returned to rugby league after being named the new head coach of the York Knights. The former Wakefield Trinity boss succeeds Andrew Henderson, who has been promoted to the role of the club’s head of rugby operations and development.

Applegarth was given the daunting challenge of keeping Wakefield Trinity in Super League last year, with the club eventually relegated after fighting all the way for survival. He later left the club and was replaced by Daryl Powell.

The 39-year-old will now be given another opportunity in the head coach game at York, who have endured a difficult start to the season in the Championship and are currently twelfth in the table, outside the relegation zone due to points difference. .

Applegarth, who has held a number of roles at Wakefield and was prominent in their youth and road set-up, takes up the role as part of a restructure of York’s on-field department, one which has seen Henderson moved into a new position .

“I have no doubt that Andrew is the right man to build a system that will nurture talent at the club through a successful academy for generations to come,” said chairman Clint Goodchild.

“Identifying Andrew as the right person for the role obviously creates an immediate problem of a Knights head coaching vacancy midway through the Championship season.

“There is no role more challenging and scrutinized than that of a head rugby coach, so the hire cannot be reactive and must be a long-term strategic appointment.

“I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Applegarth as head coach of the York Knights. With Andrew’s support and guidance, Mark will take over the reins of the team this week to maximize the time available with staff and players during the Challenge. Cup break.
