It will be up to MLB players and the commissioner’s office to decide whether A’s closer Mason Miller becomes an All-Star later this summer, but fans’ annual opportunity to vote for their favorite position players (have or not) is underway deployment.

MLB launched Phase 1 of the voting process on Wednesday. Fans can vote up to five times in a 24-hour period until 9 a.m. June 27 on MLB.com and the league’s app to determine the top six outfielders and top two players at any other position for both leagues.

The second phase runs from June 30 to July 3 to determine the American League and National League starting position players for the July 16 All-Star Game at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Pitchers and reserves – 23 for each league – will be selected by the Commissioner’s Office after a player vote determines the pool of potential candidates.

Miller, the A’s rookie shortstop, will be included on the players’ candidate list. Miller has converted 10 of 11 save opportunities and leads the majors with a 17.65 strikeout average per nine innings.

Designated hitter Brent Rooker was the A’s lone representative at last season’s game in Seattle and is on the ballot again. If Rooker makes the team, he will be the first player to represent the A’s in multiple All-Star games since Stephen Vogt in 2015-16.
