Willy Gnonto could sign a new contract

Unfortunately for Leeds United, they simply weren’t in the Play-Off Final races and were deservedly beaten by a determined and well-prepared Southampton side.

That failure to get promoted back to the Premier League at the first question will always have repercussions, not least because the club will have to save on the wage bill.

Players who might have stayed at the club had they moved up will now be looking for a way out, and Daniel Farke is generally not a manager who stands in a player’s way.

Willy Gnonto could sign a new contract at Leeds

That said, he stood firm at the start of last season when Willy Gnonto appeared to be doing everything in his power to engineer a move away from the club.

Farke’s refusal to be bullied by the player or his agent has finally paid dividends and so much so that Gnonto could very well sign a new deal at the club.

“He had talks about a new deal which remained unsigned. It wouldn’t surprise me hugely if he signs a new contract. I can’t let everyone go. If Summerville is going to leave, is Gnonto the ideal replacement to step in? Probably so,” transfer expert Graeme Bailey told Leeds United News.

“With Gnonto it depends on who else goes. The season he had, if you couldn’t sell him last summer, I don’t think clubs will be lining up this summer. For him career-wise, it’s better to stay at Leeds and sign a new contract.

“That’s how I see it going, unless one of those suitors in Italy really likes him, but I can’t see Leeds taking a massive cut fee for him. It will be hard for anyone to take him out, as he proved last summer.”
