Birmingham Airport liquid rules for hand luggage as the 100ml limit will change

Birmingham Airport has become one of the first in the UK to introduce new security screening standards for passengers and hand luggage, meaning liquid restrictions will change.

While certain liquid restrictions will remain in place, in due course this new equipment will allow liquids of up to two liters to be carried in hand luggage. But until further notice, passengers have been told they can only carry liquids up to 100ml. But now liquids can stay in your hand luggage and no longer have to be in a plastic bag when you leave Birmingham Airport.




The airport has invested £60m in its new, larger security area, which is purpose-built with simpler, streamlined equipment and will ‘future-proof’ Birmingham Airport, from its current 12m passengers per year in 2024 to accommodate 18 million passengers per year by 2033. .

Current passenger department rules for flights from Birmingham Airport:

  • Customers can only take liquids, pastes and gels up to 100 ml in hand luggage
  • The quantity of individual items per 100 ml is unlimited
  • Liquids must not be in plastic bags, only loose in hand luggage
  • Liquids, pastes and gels stay in your hand luggage during the security search area, do not remove them
  • Liquids, pastes or gels over 100 ml are not allowed through security
  • Bottles/cans of water, carbonated drinks or soft drinks over 100 ml cannot be carried in hand luggage
  • Insulated water bottles can be carried through security but must be empty, filling stations can be found here
  • Leave all electrical components in your carry-on during the security search
  • When going through security, make sure all items are removed from your pockets, including phones, keys, coins and tissues, etc. Watches can be left on
Travel preparation
  • Arrive at the airport when the airline check-in desk opens, even if you’ve checked in online and are only carrying hand luggage
  • This check-in opening time can be found in the booking details.
  • Once on site, join the security queue as directed by your airport colleagues.
  • Do not arrive before this time as check-in may not be open
  • Traveling with Jet2 or TUI before lunch? You can leave your luggage the day before. On the day you travel, go to join the security line downstairs
  • Check-in area inside the terminal: Area A for Jet2, Area D for Emirates, Areas B and C for all other airlines
  • Construction work on the new security area is still ongoing. This means that the security waiting area can start from the ground floor
  • Passengers arriving by train must head downstairs to join the security queue

Al Titterington, Director of Terminal Operations for Birmingham Airport said: “Once we receive regulatory approval to allow two liters to be carried as hand luggage through Birmingham Airport, we will then be able to transform the customer experience with this screening equipment. world class security. . In the meantime, customers are reminded that they can only carry up to 100ml in hand luggage and certainly no bottles/cans of water, fizzy drinks or soft drinks over 100ml. No plastic bags are needed for liquids, and electrical materials can also stay in hand luggage, no longer needing to be presented separately.”

“The airport looks forward to being able to announce when it will receive regulatory approval to carry two litres, until then customers should prepare as above.”
