When Leeds United release their Sheffield Wednesday retained list, expect Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday are waiting to learn the fate of loan star Ian Poveda at Leeds United.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Ian Poveda on loan from Leeds United in the January transfer window.

The Colombian immediately became a fan favourite, playing 10 times in the league and notching an assist himself.

However, Poveda would have spells on the sidelines, missing the last five games through injury as Sheffield Wednesday managed a miraculous 20th place finish.

Reports have since suggested that Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to re-sign the 24-year-old, although the Owls face competition from Burnley, Luton Town and Sunderland.

Danny Rohl and his Sheffield Wednesday squad are also waiting for Leeds United to announce their shortlist with Poveda among those who have not signed this summer.

Earlier this year, it was claimed that Leeds United would let Poveda leave the club as a free agent this summer.

When will Leeds United announce the retained list

Leeds United finished 3rd in the Championship last season, then reached the play-off final where they lost to Southampton at Wembley.

So this will inevitably delay proceedings, although many on social media expected the Whites to announce their shortlist earlier this week.

The wait continues, but LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross has now suggested in a Q&A that Leeds United’s shortlist is “likely to be published at the end of next week”.

So for Sheffield Wednesday, the wait to find out what Poveda’s fate with Leeds United will be, if already predictable, will end very soon.

And the Owls could well line up their return bid for Hillsborough for when Poveda becomes a free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday face a key battle in their pursuit of Ian Poveda

Poveda, despite his injury problems in recent seasons, has options ahead of this summer.

Burnley and Luton Town and perhaps even Sunderland will be expected to challenge at the top end of the Championship next season.

This could give Poveda an unlikely route to the Premier League should he join, while next season at Sheffield Wednesday is still somewhat uncertain.

It seems unlikely that they will struggle as much as they did last season. But if Rohl can’t bring in the players he wants, then it won’t be easy.

However, Poveda flourished at Hillsborough. Rohl’s style of play seemed to suit him well, and he knows that if he returns, Rohl will show confidence in him and the fans will.

He would be a smart capture for the Owls if they could land him on a free transfer, and if he can stay fit then he could be one of the best players in the league next season.
