Major UK airport hit by massive delays and queues as passengers unleash ‘carnage’

A major airport was described as “disgraceful” this morning (June 6) as passengers complained of scenes of “carnage” as huge queues swirled outside before people could check-in. BirminghamLive reported that Birmingham Airport has been hit by weeks of problems with people. being delayed and even missing flights.

The site’s reporter said it took him an hour and 17 minutes to get through security. Tourists took to social media to vent their frustrations. One described the airport as “carnage”, while another said the size of the queue was “disgraceful”.

The airport completed its £60m “state-of-the-art” security hall upgrade in May after months of building work. It will eventually allow passengers to carry liquids of up to two liters in hand luggage, but it has yet to go live.

But despite the work being completed, the airport said that “until further notice” passengers would be able to carry liquids of up to 100ml as “partial regulatory restrictions” were put in place. The airport said the upgrade would allow it to accommodate 18 million passengers by 2033 – up from 12 million today. Passenger Alison Woolhouse said she was told to join the huge queue outside the airport after checking in her bags. She described the scenes as “carnage”. Passenger Kevin Brown, traveling from BHX this morning, described the scenes at the airport as “absolutely disgraceful”.

Sharing a picture of the long queue outside the front doors of the airport, he added: ‘Arrive at 5.30 for a 7.45 departure and I encountered this. Shy.”

Birmingham Airport has been contacted for comment. On its website it says: “Our construction work on our new security area is still ongoing. This means that the security waiting area is mainly on the ground floor. Birmingham Airport is one of the first airports in the UK to meet the government’s new security equipment directive.

“The airport has taken this opportunity to build its future by building a new security search area that will be streamlined, faster and simpler.”
