Manchester Airport is missing an important deadline as hand luggage rules have been clarified for passengers

Tourists will continue to face strict hand luggage limits after Manchester Airport missed a deadline to install new security scanners.

Four UK airports have already rolled out the new technology, which removes the need for travelers to adhere to strict 100ml liquids rules and place them in clear plastic boxes. It also means passengers will no longer have to remove electronic devices such as laptops while going through security.

The Next Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) scanners were to be rolled out at major airports before this summer, with the government setting a nominal deadline of June 1.

However, many – including Manchester Airport – have had to be granted extensions and won’t be able to introduce the new scanners until 2025. It means passengers flying out of Manchester this summer will have to stick to the 100ml liquid limit, in while containers must still be. put in clear plastic bags.

Manchester Airports Group, which runs Manchester Airport as well as East Midlands and Stansted airports, expects its scanners to be fully implemented by next year.

Airports in Aberdeen, Teesside, London City and Bristol have already installed the machines, which use 3D scanning technology and have reduced waiting times by 50% as they eliminate the need to manually check bags. Thanks to the new scanners, passengers will be able to carry bottles containing up to two liters of liquid in their hand luggage.

The move will apply to UK airports, so the rules can still apply to other destinations or for a journey back to the UK.
