Sunderland should target Omari Forson after exit from Manchester United

Sunderland will have a busy transfer window ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The Black Cats are yet to name a new head coach and while that is a pressing issue, the hierarchy will also focus on player recruitment.

Sunderland have built a talented young squad over the last two seasons and that has seen several of their big players linked with moves.

That will no doubt be the case again this summer, and Sunderland’s success next season could come down to how well they replace whoever might leave.

In January, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough were all linked with Manchester United youngster Omari Forson, but he stayed at Old Trafford after the deadline.

It has now been confirmed that he will leave for free this summer and I think it is an avenue worth exploring for the Wearsiders.

Who is this?

A repeat Amad?

Forson, 19, made four Premier League appearances for the Red Devils last season. In Premier League 2, he scored three and assisted three in six outings, making it his fourth campaign in Manchester United’s academy, where he proved to be a constant goal threat.

It would be bold to assume that Forson will reach the heights that Amad did in the North East, but the 19-year-old could well see Sunderland as the ideal place to develop, especially after seeing what he made his teammate during his time at the club. .

On a free transfer, it very much suits what Sunderland are trying to achieve. It would be a smart business and one with potential for profit later.

His versatility means he can fill a gap either on the wing or as a central attacking midfielder and the time seems right for the prospect to venture into consistent senior football.

It is not an easy race to win

So far, there have been no reports on where Forson might end up next season. However, it would be fair to assume that when he becomes a free agent, he will have no shortage of potential clubs.

Sunderland’s positive record in youth development would give them a boost. But, the current state of things behind the scenes at the club may be disappointing for any player being asked to commit their future there at the moment.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sunderland back in the running for Forson this summer, and the race could become even more interesting if fellow north-east rivals Newcastle United and Boro rekindle their interest.
