Premier League free agents in full swing this summer as Coventry City continue their sustainable recruitment drive

It’s no secret that Coventry City have big promotion ambitions, but they continue to perform in a sustainable way in the transfer window as they tackle what owner Doug King calls a “massive challenge” in a division full of club football which record losses.

That means the Sky Blues will sometimes sell big names, as they did with Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer last summer, albeit reluctantly, to fund a rebuilding project. That process continues into the current closed season, when it is unclear at this stage how much manager Mark Robins will have at his disposal.

City have had great success in the past with free offers, bringing in the likes of Callum O’Hare for example from Aston Villa for next to nothing in years past, with the attacking midfielder set to be a big hit at the club. So is there a gem of a player who could be arriving for free this summer?

Dean Austin and his recruitment team now have an extensive list of candidates to consider, with the Premier League shortlists published this week. Some on the list are already on the verge of moving to new clubs. Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly looks set to head to Newcastle, while Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo makes the short trip to Chelsea.

Many, of course, will be out of City’s price range in terms of wages, but there are plenty of other interesting names, young players who have slipped up and may need to take a step down to recover . There are also some familiar names, with ex-Sky Blues loanee Jack Cork, 34, being let go by Burnley and Sheffield United midfielder Oliver Norwood, now 33. They are clearly at the end wrong of Coventry’s usual age range for new recruits. but Robins spoke of the need to replace the experience, leadership and character lost by the departure of Kyle McFadzean last January.

Are there any players here that you feel City could realistically target? Tell us in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
