Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on extending Josh Windass’ contract

Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on a deal to extend Josh Windass’ contract at Hillsborough despite interest from elsewhere, according to The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to keep Windass at the club despite interest from the Championship and League One.

Windass, 30, scored six and assisted two in 30 league games last season.

He has been instrumental in Danny Rohl’s side’s success throughout the 2023/24 season and has been a crucial part of the Owls’ success since his first full season in 2020.

His deal expires at the end of this month and with that have come links to other clubs hoping to land him for free.

Championship side Coventry City and Hull City were said to be leading the race for the experienced midfielder. However, a new report claims that Birmingham City have also made a late bid to swoop in and tempt him to League One this summer.

This new report goes on to say that Sheffield Wednesday have made progress in their negotiations and are now expected to complete talks with Windass. However, there are still some details to be agreed.

A huge boost

Windass is a big figure in Sheffield Wednesday’s dressing room. His experience and skills are invaluable to the Owls and they are much better off with him than without him.

Rohl looks to be building something very exciting at the club after their dramatic survival last season and they will be hoping to continue that momentum and take it into next season. If they do this and recruit smart, there’s no reason the Owls can’t push for the top half of the division this season.

Just as we kept Rohl at the club despite interest earlier this summer, keeping Windass would be a hugely positive sign that the players are fully on board with the direction the club is heading.

With small steps

The future is bright for Sheffield Wednesday at the moment, but it’s important to remember where they were not so long ago and it will take time for Rohl to fulfill the potential he showed signs of last season.

If Rohl can get Windass to feature more than the 25 league games he played last season then he could easily get double goal contributions from the versatile midfielder and that alone would go a long way for them to have a strong season next year.

Sheffield Wednesday are certainly one of the clubs to watch over the summer and next season, and keeping Windass at the club would only add to the excitement filling the fan base at the moment.
