231 vehicles were stopped and 21 arrests were made following a road safety operation in Devon and Cornwall.

It was part of Operation Vortex, which ran throughout May to reduce crashes and casualties by targeting dangerous and reckless driving.

Arrests including drink or drug driving, speeding – and the arrest of two people suspected of stealing motorbikes in Cornwall.

“The last few weeks have been really tragic”

Motor Constable Richie Roome of the Alliance Road Policing Team said: “In recent weeks we have unfortunately seen an increase in the number of people killed and seriously injured on our county roads.

“We hope the results of this operation reassure our communities that we are committed to taking dangerous drivers off our roads and keeping people safe.”

Drivers caught committing offenses could face a fine and points on their licence, a court appearance or even jail time for more serious offences.

Constable Roome added: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to take extra care on the roads and allow more time to look out for other road users.

“The last few weeks have been truly tragic and the last thing our officers want to do is knock on doors to tell someone their loved one isn’t coming home.”
