Calvin Ramsay joins Wigan Athletic as the former Dons star goes out on loan again

Former Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay has joined English side Wigan Athletic on loan from Liverpool for the 2024/25 season.

The former Dons right-back has struggled with injuries and frustrating loan spells since joining the Anfield side from Aberdeen in 2022, limited to just two appearances on Merseyside in his debut campaign.

Ramsay, who earned his first senior Scotland cap in a friendly against Turkey, was sent out on loan last term to Lancashire sides Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers in search of valuable game time.

But after difficult spells with both Preston and Bolton, the 20-year-old will be hoping for an improved season with the Latics, where he links up with fellow Aberdonian and club manager Shaun Maloney.

His arrival at the Brick Community Stadium follows the loan arrival of Brentford’s Michael Olakigbe, and Ramsay told how his instant connection with Maloney influenced him to move away from Anfield.

He told Wigan’s club website: “I’m over the moon. It happened quickly and I met him with the manager (Shaun Maloney) two weeks ago. We had a really good conversation and there was an instant connection. I’m excited to start. of the season.
